Thermistors and Thermocouples
3D Printers are made up of many parts, but one of the most important is the temperature sensors. These are sometimes referred to as: Thermistors and Thermocouples, but they all do one job, and that is change resistance, which the printers mainboard and firmware turns into a temperature. These are a consumable part as over time, with all the heat cycling, they will start to become less sensitive and will need replacing. If you are having strange readings, error codes or inconsistent print results, it could be caused by this component.
